About Haburas Foundation
The Haburas Foundation was formed by a group of Timorese students in 1998 during the Indonesian occupation of Timor-Leste. It is the oldest and most active national environmental group in the country. Haburas uses a wide network of local community groups and relies on traditional Timorese culture to promote better environmental management practices that respond to the developmental needs of local communities.
environmental and land rights advocacy
Haburas is actively involved in environmental education and advocacy. Since Timor-Leste’s independence, Haburas has tackled a number of high-priority environmental initiatives and is a core member of the Rede ba Rai (Land Network) coalition.
Community-based tourism initiatives
Haburas are specialists in developing community-run tourism initiatives and hosting international study tours. We support tourism practices that and strengthen local people’s connections to environment, culture and place.
